A Primate's Memoir by Robert Sapolsky

"I joined the baboon troop during my twenty-first year. I had never planned to become a savanna baboon when I grew up; instead I had always assumed I would become a mountain gorilla."

The second book has been chosen and it's a fantastic one. After a classic Victorian novel last month, we're going to be reading an exciting and fascinating non-fiction book. A Primate's Memoir by Robert Sapolsky. I first heard of this book on NPR which has never steered me wrong so far. Robert Sapolsky is a neuroscientist and he writes about his experiences in Africa over the course of his life as he studies a troop of baboons. He is currently a professor at Stanford but all of the science portions are explained extremely well at a level that anyone can follow. In addition to the hilarious stories about the baboon troop he has chapters on some compelling African history and social structure as well as a few tourist stories and travel logs of side trips he takes around the continent. The chapters don't always build on each other as they talk about different topics but they progress in time towards a memorable and emotional ending. It's funny, sweet, scary, and sad all at the same time. I learned so much from this book about a place in the world that I think is really intriguing. I hope I don't get your hopes up too high about it because I want you all to love it as much as I did. I can't wait to read it again and talk about it with all of you next month.

Our next meeting has been changed from the usual 3rd Thursday of the month due to The Office. It will be on the third Wednesday instead. October 15th at Gina's house. See you all there!

I posted this before I ran the spell check. I fixed it but it's taking awhile to update. If you happen to see it with all my nightmare spelling mistakes please don't make fun of the fact that I can't spell Thursday correctly to save my life.

YES!! The Office.

YES! My house.

Ok, sorry I sabotaged our Thursday evenings, but I all think we can gain a little more culture by viewing the finer workings of a Scranton-based paper products company.

Oh, and... check this out: http://www.nbc.com/The_Office/justforfun/finerthingsclub/

We should do it, just once.

P.S. I'm excited about the book.

Oh yes Gina, we should totally do the finer things club. I love it. :) I am very excited about this book. I will be getting it on Monday. If any of you need it...I bought it on Amazon for $4.00 plus shipping and handling. Not too bad. :)

Ok, anyone else think that the Finer Things club would be good fun?

Oh, Candi-

Can you put up a new category on the side bar which lists the books we have read and will be updated?

Finer things club sounds good to me. Me and Candi discussed this a little before the first meeting, but it just didn't pan out. I thought about having some kind of themed treats at the last meeting to go with the book. The only kind of food they mentioned in the book much was tea and I didn't think it would really be fun to sit around and drink tea. Plus it was hot like I said so I went with the ice cream bars. Also having read the current book already, I don't think you're going to want to eat any of the food mentioned. Not even coke and spaghetti, and everything else it too gross to even consider.

I also wanted to tell you guys, make sure you don't skip the introduction by the author and I especially liked the dedication. I always read the dedications at the front of books. If you keep it in mind as you read it I think this one gave the end a sweet little twist.

I'm fine with the finer things and I like the book so far, about three chapters in. I need to go back and read the dedication now.

And what, you don't want to have Zebra kabobs?

Candi Criddle said...

Gina-Yes, yes I can.

Just wait Candi, the zebra kabobs are actually pretty appetizing once he tells you what he usually eats everyday...and then they making ices...
