The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

"But answer me this, how can a story end happily if there is no love?"

First of all I want to say I LOVE THIS BOOK. I have read it out load to people multiple times and given it away as gifts always to later get rave reviews from the recipient, so I'm fairly confident you will all love it. After the "heavy" book we read last month, a more easy to read and family friendly story was picked for this month. (how did I end up picking the book again?)Although I think you could argue that for a children's book this is pretty heavy in its own way. In the spirit of kids book that can make you cry (think The Giving Tree, Charlotte's Web, or The Velveteen Rabbit...) this book will break your heart not just once but a few times before the end. In our last book we got a good look at the special love that can develop between a husband and a wife, but this book looks deeper into different aspects of love, letting yourself be loved, and learning to love others. Plus, with Easter coming up it's about a bunny, I mean rabbit, (Edward hates being called a bunny) so it can help us all get into the spirit of soft furry ears and long whiskers. The pictures are beautiful as well, I wish all books had pictures...

This book will take you maybe 2 days to read. A few hours if you're Candi, or maybe a week if you're Candi reading it to her kids. Maybe you could read it to yourself, then read it again out loud to someone else. All the books I've read by Kate DiCamillo have been great although this is by far my favorite. Don't let Candi tell you she stopped writing after Despereaux either because this book came out a few years later and she has a new one being published this fall so she's still writing. Now if she would only do something about her hair and eyebrows she'd be the perfect children's author. I'm sorry, but I can't get past it. I've been traumatized by nightmares of Shel Silverstein for too long and I just can't take one more odd looking children's author. I'm shallow, I know, but maybe if I read the story of Edward one more time I can get over it...and maybe not... "Is my hat still on my head?"

Please Please Please enjoy this book and meet us next month April 15th at Gina's house for a discussion and some "good old rabbit pie."

I'm very excited about this book. I told my Mom about it and said she reads it to her kids every year.

Hey guys what's 'rabbit pie' seems a bit mmm... gross to me- you know if you send me the recipe I could maybe have my own food ready when the 15th comes. Will I be able to see you guys? I can't remember Gina's internet situation. I'm excited to read this.

I'm new here, but I just finished the book, and I LOVED it. I cried. In a good way. Good pick.

Oh my heck! Katie! This was a great book. I read it really fast (so no thesis progress was harmed) and I just loved it! I cried too Shannon. It was lovely. Can't wait to talk about it.

Hey Marie,

I don't have wireless at the moment. I did, but it conked on me. But perhaps we could hook up the ethernet to someone's laptop?

I'll bring my laptop, no problemo

I loved this story. After I finished crying my eyes out it made me want to go find my doll Crystal again, fix her up and tell her I love her. The illustrations are beautiful too. Even better than I imagined. Hopefully Maggie will let me read her stories someday because Cannon refuses. What a stink pot.

Great book and really good discussion. I think the best so far, imho (I'm learning new hip acronyms- ok, maybe not new and hip anymore but I'm 30 for crying out loud! I'm allowed to be behind the times a bit now, right??! I've earned it!!!) Ummm... back to the book: Katie, good choice. It didn't make me cry, but it was a heartfelt book and I could relate to the characters, especially the dumb southern ones. ha ;)
